De Greek and Patch Adams – perfect partners?
80Doctors and Dentists
I'm sure many Hubbers know De Greek – well, he does have about 460 “followers”, so at least they must read the witty and otherwise utterly useless things he writes here on HubPages. He was also for a mercifully short time an “elite” here, whatever that means!
Anyway, he wrote a Hub a while back about “Doctors and Dentists” in which he lamented the need of those of us of relatively advanced years (I have to admit to being about six years older than he is!) to have what is politely called a “rectal examination” - which is just a euphemism for having someone, preferably a suitably qualified medical person – oh, what the hell and political correctness be damned – a suitably qualified medical man, shove a finger up one's bum (suitably lubricated and rubber-gloved, of course!). As a man one might not really like it to be a woman doctor – but more on that later!
Now the alleged purpose of this is to check whether or not one has an enlarged prostate gland, apparently a good indicator of prostate cancer, to which men of a certain age are particularly prone, especially if they have been cyclists for a long time (check this out, Micky Dee!).
Since healthcare is very topical at the moment, whether socialised or privatised, I thought to share a little story of my own, inspired by De Greek's Hub.
The Patch Adams connection
To cut a long story even longer I am facing this not too pleasant prospect in the next month.
Now my women readers – being the modest fellow I am, despite some nasty allegations to the contrary, I cannot brag here – the many adoring women readers I seem to have garnered during my three years on HubPages, also have to undergo certain medical examinations, very often by male gynaecologists.
Now it might not be very pertinent to the story that I'm trying to tell, but I have often wondered about the number of male gynaecologists. This is a purely academic question asked in a genuine search for knowledge, so please, any male gynaecologist reading this should please not become defensive – but is there a particular type of male who gets attracted to this noble profession? I think anyone who has seen the movie “Patch Adams” will be able to relate to my question.
Back to my story...
As my annual "rectal examination" is coming up in the next few weeks I thought I would read De Greek's wonderful Hub again, just to prepare myself adequately for the experience, and left the following comment, which De Greek in his usual imperious way immediately ordered me to make a Hub of. His words verbatim: "First of all, put this down in a Hub and make all your friends laugh. Get your finger out (!) and get on with it immediately."
So, obedient as always (?) here it is. I hope you enjoy it!
This is what I said (well, more or less!)
Needless to say your Hub is devoid of anything useful in that regard (preparing my mind for the rectal exam ordeal!), but it got me to thinking about dentists, not a subject I usually spend much time on.
I once had to go to a person answering that general description in a rural area of our lovely country to get a tooth fixed that I had broken on the steak I had mistakenly tried in a dining car of our illustrious railway service. I had come by rail from university in the Cape to visit with my parents who were then living in Butterworth in the former Transkei.
Being rather young and easily impressed I was very taken with the young lass (her legs were long and her skirt was short – do I have to elaborate?) impersonating a receptionist in the waiting area of his euphemistically-termed "rooms". So much so that I did not notice when he went to work on the wrong tooth with a wickedly blunt, very old, drill, promptly demolishing that tooth also!
By the time I came out of his "rooms" I
had a very rough filling in the wrong tooth and the broken tooth
still broken. Not to mention an aching jaw and a certain inexpressible longing ...!
The young lady impersonating the receptionist
smiled sweetly as I went out, causing me to trip over the threadbare
carpet as I made for the door, almost cracking another tooth in the
process! And doing absolutely nothing about my inexpressible longing, though I'm sure, as a woman of the world, she could not have been unaware of it!
I afterwards found out two things which might or might not have a bearing on the story: firstly the so-called "dentist" was what is politely called a "piss-cat"; and the pretend-receptionist, less than half his age, was his lady-friend, not to put too fine a point on it!
Patch Adams Reads the Most Powerful Letter He Has Ever Received to Todd Fossey
The moral of the story
What's the moral of my sad tale? I have absolutely no idea, and, despite my plea, De Greek did not help either!
In my comment on the afrorementioned Hub I had entered a heartfelt plea: " I ... thought in your infinite wisdom you could help me there? Perhaps you could do a Hub about it" How neatly he turned the tables on me - now I'm writing the Hub about it!
However, on reflection, I think that perhaps De Greek is really a healer and spreader of peace and understanding, the way the real Patch Adams is.
I'm not talking about the rather over-sentimental movie of that name, but rather about Hunter Doherty Adams, nicknamed "Patch", who was born in 1945 and got his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He made two crucial decisions early in his career: firstly to serve humanity through medicine and secondly never to have a bad day.
In fulfilment of those two decisions he started the Gesungheit! Institute, a "project in holistic medical care based on the belief that one cannot separate the health of the individual from the health of the family, the community, the world, and the health care system itself."
His belief is that "laughter, joy and creativity are an integral part of the healing process."
I think that De Greek spreads a lot of that through his thoroughly humane, enjoyable, witty and entertaining Hubs. Maybe he's not the only one on HubPages who does this, but he certainly is among the best.
So maybe his Hubs aren't so useless after all, as they do spread "laughter, joy and creativity" in good meaure!
So there you are, De Greek, I think I have followed your order to the letter and even, perhaps, added a little spirit!
A final note:
Now this last comment I'm sure will be a welcome gift to those who think healthcare should be "privatised" - I attend a public health service clinic where I get all my medications free plus a bi-annual examination by a very well-qualified and proficient doctor. I have the greatest respect for this doctor and have received excellent care and advice. No problems in that regard.
The only problem is that the doctor who will be sticking a finger up my bum is a woman, and a young, attractive one at that! And, in addition, she is no young Rashmi, and so won't take my word for the condition of my protate, no matter how much I might protest! It'll be the finger, otherwise known as the "Rockefeller Salute", no matter what!
A little more about the "real" Patch Adams
A visit to the Gesundheit! Institute's home page is very educative and uplifting. It is a wonderful place to visit. On the site is a lot of information about the "real" Patch Adams and the many projects he has been and still is involved in.
There is even an invitation to health- and care-workers to contribute to a project on developing a curriculum for "The Education of Compassion" which is envisaged as a 2 to 6 year programme. Interested people are invited to "Be a co-designer for the future of health care, a future emphasizing compassionate and joyful service."
A worthwhile endeavour, I should think!

Patch Adams's 10 questions
On the website of the Gesundheit! Institute (and don't you just love the exclamation mark in the middle of the name?) are some of Patch's "Precriptions", one of which, in the form of ten questions, is reproduced below.
1. If no one wants to end up in a nursing home, what kind of community can celebrate all ages together and honor elders?
2. Could you choose at least one child you're not related to and give them the time and care they need?
3. If compassion and generosity were the measure of success that money and power are now, how would your life change?
4. In order to bond your neighborhood in healthy interdependence you would need to host weekly potlucks. Would you?
5. If being publicly joyful, even silly, were beneficial for our society, would you participate?
6. If you have rooms at your home, why not take in single parents as a gift?
7. How can we move to an economics of friendship?
8. Could you do ten or more volunteer hours each week to make a healthier world?
9. Do you dare to be universally friendly to end violence?
10. Can you match the cost of everything you buy with a donation to an environmental sustainability project?

Good luck with your prostate date,Tony,be sure to bring flowers, lol.;)
Tony, a very interesting and amusing hub. Having recently experienced the ordeal you are facing, I can relate well to what you are saying. My doctor is also female, and very good looking, so I totally understand your thoughts on this matter. The only advantage to this scenario is most women have smaller fingers than men, so this may work in your favor.
After the first three paragraphs I thought perhaps I should not go on reading, but curiosity pushed me forward. And I read all the way smiling behind my hand.
How amazingly different are men from women. When something really disturb a man, he turns it into a joke. I honestly admire and covet this ability!
Tony, I enjoyed this hub – your trifling with De Greek is clearly with respect and a grounded trust that De Greek appreciates your humor and will not feel offended. I’m always in awe while I’m watching the fun men enjoy in each other’s company. They don’t have to consider each other’s ‘feelings’. Women are the sensitive and touchy ones, always to be assured that they are special and adorable. Now what shall I say about this... fait accompli?
Ref your dreaded doctor’s appointment – Women – I believe the majority of us – hate every moment of every internal check-up. We avoid it, postpone it, but eventually we have to throw in the towel. Then we just get it over and done... pretend we are not embarrassed. My doctor once said to me: “We (doctors) also feel uncomfortable, but we’ve got to do it... it is our job.”
Tony, I wish you all of the best, and hope with all my heart that not one of your fears becomes unpleasant reality.
Great write Tony. I would always opt for a woman to do that work. Be it a woman I don't know well though. Women have the smaller fingers. Men who have very large fingers are in the wrong profession or hole.
You are so funny, Tony. Hope all goes well in your coming check up!
Great hub Tony, if I was in that profession and I had just read this I would probably burst out laughing or at best there would be a silly grin on my face as I went at it to examine my next patient and that would not have been very nice for him would it!!!! Ha ha!
So instead I will be working at home with a stupid grin on my face !!!
Thanks for this great read Tony and an awesome plus up here.
Take care
Eiddwen
Imagine the surprise on my face when I came across this. My first reaction was "How is Feline Prophet going to react to this?". My second was "Who is Patch Adams?". And my third was, do I dare tell my friends about this, as they are probably fed up with me. :-))
If I understand correctly, what we are doing here is celebrating your forthcoming induction into a very special group of manly men and I for one shall toast the event with the seriousness it deserves :-)))
But you broke my heart with the reading of that child's letter ...
Anyway, thank you for the mention and for the links. However, you have chosen the only serious ones I have written, and perhaps I can induce you to replace them with more humorous stories, in line with the spirit of this clever hub.
I SINCERELY hope that you do not enjoy your forthcoming visit to the doctor, for the sake of your own dignity and self respect :-)))))
Tony Mac - I hear your pain and admire you sharing it with all of us....my husband feels the same way although it's a necessary 'evil' as he has prostate cancer abounding in his family.
I of course, being the kind and compassionate wife that I am say things that are quite supportive like 'are you KIDDING me? How do you think it feels having people stick all kinds of things in your wahoo for a Pap smear? And I might add they almost ALWAYS are men! Or how about that crowd standing around watching my privates when your beautiful children came flying out?'
You see, with a little support like that from folks, you'd have nothing to worry about! Try it - have your wife or significant other or just a couple of supportive women give you a couple of moral support lectures as I have done with my husband (did I say lectures...uh oh - cat's outta the bag)...it does wonders for his PSA level I have no doubt.
Seriously - my contention has always been - isn't there a better way to get this information or a less humiliating form of examination??? Ah well - wishing you much luck in your embarrassing moment. I routinely strap on rubber gloves (when cleaning of course) and turn to Bob with a smile and say 'cough and bend over'.
Just warming him up for the 'big time'!
I think Audrey was a doctor in a former life. She's funny. So are you Tony. Interesting and funny hub. rated up!
I feel for you, tony, figuratively speaking of course. But it could be worse. The female doctor could be a younger woman, someone you and your wife know and socialize with, and have very plump fingers.
Do keep us posted. :) Good luck.
Dimitris has a very subtle influence on so many people but whenever we interact he makes me smile. Tony good luck with the examination, you made me smile too!
Hi Tony. I'd say "what's up?" but I already think I know more than I bargained for when I decided to check out your tail.(no pun intented). Anyway, thanks to DG the 'great promoter', we're all thinking about you now. Thanks also for posting the quote "laughter, joy and creativity are an integral part of the healing process." Words to live by. Namaste!
Tony, at first I wish you the best possible results of your examination. That is all what matters.
Well, men always complain about this examination, it is not good if is performed by man, not good if it is performed by young and attractive woman ,it is just never good, and the best would be if not performed at all. For the difference, women willingly surrender themselves to the all kinds of gynecological examinations, whenever needed and so often when is not needed at all, and these examinations are just horrible to my humble opinion, and very often have very unpleasant consequences if done roughly, not to mention that they are painful.
As always, I think that men are more wise when they don`t feel comfortable about surrendering their body holes to somebody to whom these holes does not belong.
Altough some examinations needs to be done, it is better to not to feel too comfortable about it.
I wish you - good luck.
Love and hugs
You've really hit below the waist on this one, Tony.
Is it just me or don't De Greek and Patch Adams look like they may be related?
Great topic that men don't like to "open" up to, since being the strong, silent types and discussing these matters seems to leave one clenching cheeks.
At any rate, once we get to this stage in life you think we'd be used to taking it up the wazoo--isn't that most of life...lol?
As for Patch Adams ten questions. In Canada many smaller communities have these integrated lives where young and old live together and know one another--each respects the phase of life the other is going through. I, in particular, think of the communal faith of the Mennonites of southern Manitoba, which try to live a socialized existence that allows for the care of both young and old.
At any rate, it is interesting to discuss these unmasculine topics with a butt load of humour, but I'm going to start paying attention to practitioners with thin fingers--why not plan ahead?
Great hub, Tony and thanks for keeping up your end--alright, I'll stop. It's just too inviting to discuss this matter 'tongue in cheeky' when you combine dentistry and proctology.
DeGreek-I'm glad you referred me to visit this hub! Hugs.
But, dear Martie -ACK! - about that GYN who admitted to being just as uncomfortable doing the examinations - small comfort~!! The one reassurance for the patient is her certainty that the doctor is an impersonal professional and - hopefully - almost robotic in performing the examination, rather than being just as embarrassed and awkward as herself! haha.
However, among my less forgettable experiences: on the ceiling over one GYN's examination table was a poster of a panicky kitty barely attached to a tree limb with a caption: HANG IN THERE! Maybe not quite so funny at the time, but in retrospect. . . .- LOL
Tony! Good hub. Yes, you certainly did add spirit to the De Greek's suggestion for a hub! Glad he turned the tables on you when you urged him to write more about the subject and charged YOU to write it! Lots of hilarity and also much of value in this one!
I recall reading about the Gesundheit! Institute and its philosophies, which happen to coincide with many of m own. I am a living proponent of "laughter joy and creativity" being integral to one's health - and active longevity, too.
As many of you know, tomorrow I am celebrating my 79th birthday, which actually finishes my first 79 years here on Earth and launches the 80th. I look forward to many more! I have only ONE medical prescription, estrogen supplement, and I'm not dependent on it. I seldom need OTC My diet furnishes my nutrients for health. Life is good! I'm disgustingly healthy, especially considering that my first year on earth was not launched with a lot of physical advantages, health-wise. But I came into a family who believed in the "whole" person in caring for health matters and I've always thought that "health care" should be about HEALTH issues, not primarily about illness issues. And I think that "preventative" should be about healthy personal life style in one's own control, not prescribed medicine by someone else called some version of a Healthcare Specialist, making one feel helpless to care for oneself!
Really caring for health, in either case - reaching into every aspect of a person's living and being - would surely minimize - maybe even conquer the need for illness-care, which is what we have for the most part. But it would also put the so-called healthcare specialists out of business! LOL Not too surprising they are not pressing for this, for the most part - with the exception of Patch Adams and his special breed!
Incidentally, Randslam, my Dad was reared a Mennonite in Northern Indiana. Mother was not of that faith, but attended Mennonite-sponsered schools. They were most health conscious, as well as, of course - community-conscious. Even after totally leaving that influence and striking out on their own (eventually to Texas), they had that consciousness. In the early year or so of their marriage they lived in the Pacific Northwest, and they sold "People's Home Library" books door-to-door- in Washington, Oregon and Canada. These huge tomes were full of home remedies for anything and everything - vital for rural families who had no access to (or preference for) formal medical help.
Great Hub Tony, You have a lot of ideas and sense of humor's person. Like It!
Tony, I'm confused. I thought De Greek was an Attorney
( Martie's case ) Hee, anyhoo, i Thought i would relate a true event that happened to me a few years back. I was having a vaginal exam ( not a pap smear ) after the Doctor finished, he moved to my side, pressing against my arm, i felt a hard bulge against my arm, now this Doctor was a Gynecologist! Did i ever go see him again? NO,Did i report him? NO. I truly FEEL ( Sorry for the pun ) for you, and hoping only the best for you my friend.
Nice hub Tonymac and you have a way with words... I feel for you but I am glad that you are getting this exam, my exhusband is suffering through prostate cancer and colon cancer right now that has spread to his liver but he is still fighting the good fight. As for woman getting their exam, I would rather have a man do it. I feel that if someone is going to be touching me down there its gonna have to be a man. LOL. Cheers.
Hi Tony,
The best of luck on your trip to the doc.
You're supposed to eat lots of broccoli, for your prostate; it might not protect against cancer, but it'll give it a good blast-past.
Good luck with your doctor visit and prostate. Great reading this hub.
hey Tony,
you write with amazing clarity as you try to establish that you have and are not a pain in the a.
you are precise concise and direct and so i am very clear now about that your dentist is acutally a pretty gynaecologist who wears short skirts and pretends to be a greek receptionist near your fathers house.i just hope and pray she rememebrs she is a gynae and forgets that she is a dentist when she is examining your- err you know what.
i sympathise with you when you say Degreek is our leader and accept it as a part of life but all of us must resolve that we will not collectively drink poison to go to a better place if he tells us to.
It is wrong to say he has put up his own photograph on his facebook page. This is a handsome and decent guy here.No wonder my sister Feline P. swoons when someone mentions the greek name. Kindly confirm where such pics are available as i would love to upload one such one my facebook page too since the last woman who swooned over me was in 1955 and she had not swooned she had fainted when i as born saying ughhhhhhhhhh.
Patch adams makes sense of course and in India we do look after our parents at home, at least my gen did and the kids sure will too though may opt to stay close to our houses if not in them.and yes the more we give the more the LORD gives back so that we may GIVE still more.
I remember watching the film about Patch Adams some years ago. I'm thinking Robin Williams would make a great De Greek when our dear friend is finally immortalised on screen! :)
Meanwhile, tonymac...all the best with the exam! :D
Ha! Very funny Tony! Sorry to be so amused at your expense, but you started it. ;) Good luck with the exam!
Good luck with the exam, Tony.
As for Dim...er...De Greek, he really does spread good cheer around, doesn't he? I don't think there could have been a better comparison :)
Next to your funny hub...what could be better than Patch Adam's 10 questions?
Enjoyed reading your hub, although I kept telling myself to read something else. I like your style of writing. I hope your exam went well and that you continue with your creative wit and writing talent.
I very much enjoyed your various parts/stories in this Hub. I can answer Yes! to each of the ten questions asked by Patch Adams. Thank you for this good read.

Another great hub Tony!
I am currently working on your questions one and two. I had a delay in my 30 day challenge due to inhome care of an elderly woman, and a young boy who's parents kicked him out of the house. (He is currently staying with us.)I figure that helping them was worth more than meeting the challenge.
I hope your meeting with the one finger woman goes well and there are no hidden surprises to deal with.
I will be more aware now of doctors and dentists. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and experiences!
